High Protein Diet

This used to be a very popular dietary theory amongst those who are trying to lose weight but does it really work in the long run?

Dr. Robert Atkins argued that the main reason for obesity was refined carbohydrates found in a lot of the processed foods we eat today. So he suggested eating a high protein diet and as a result burning stored body fat and ultimately losing weight through a process called Ketosis. This all sounds great but how long can we actually stay on this kind of diet and consume this amount of meat?

This is where the problems start; people go on the diet, lose weight, come off the diet and put the weight back on.  Another concern is, can eating this much meat really be good for us?  Too much protein in the diet may lead to heart disease and cancer as well as other minor discomforts such as constipation, bad breath, depression and body odors. So is it all worth it?  These are just a few of the facts and concerns – I’ll leave it for you to decide!

One good thing I would take from this is that high protein diets are known to reduce hunger and therefore we eat less. Take this piece of information and use it to your advantage. To stave off hunger make sure you include a source of protein with every meal. There are several different types of protein to choose from:

  • Lean meat such as chicken and turkey
  • Fish
  • Beans
  • Tofu
  • Eggs
  • Nuts

Experiment with different foods and have fun with it.
